ABOUT
International Comparison of Producer Prices for Milk
The EDF-ZuivelNL International Milk Price Comparison encompasses milk prices obtained from the average prices paid to dairy producers by sixteen large European dairies. The producer prices of this comparison comprise bonus payments for both volume and quality of milk deliveries. Additional bonus payments are provided for seasonality, specific milk streams, sustainability as well as annual supplementary payments are included in the annual prices.
Furthermore, this comparison also incorporates farm gate milk prices from the USA and New Zealand. In the case of the USA, the prices are determined by referencing the USDA class III price. For New Zealand, the basis for calculation is derived from Fonterra’s pricing, as Fonterra stands as the world’s leading dairy exporter.

MILK PRICE REVIEW AUGUST 2025
Milk Market Update
The calculated milk price for August 2025 is expected to average €49.83 per 100 kg of standard milk. This means the average price is 0.7% lower than in July 2025, but still 7.5% higher than in August 2024.
The main reason for the price decrease is the lower calculated milk prices in Ireland and England. In most other European countries, milk prices have remained fairly stable.
EU milk production rose by 1% in July, ending several months of slow growth. Ireland and Poland saw strong increases (+4%), while France grew slightly again. In contrast, Belgium (-3%) and Germany (-1%) continued to decline. Overall, EU milk supply from January to July was 0.3% lower than last year (or +0.1% after adjusting for the leap day).
Globally, most major dairy exporters also saw growth. The US production rose sharply (+4%), Argentina (+8%) and Uruguay (+3%) increased strongly, and New Zealand saw a small rise (+1%). Only Australia recorded another decline (-4%). In total, milk output from major exporters was 1% higher than in 2024 (or +1.5% adjusted).
Butter prices have dropped sharply since July, reaching €550 at the end of September. Higher milk supply and fat content have increased butter availability, while cream prices have also fallen. Demand remains weak, as most buyers are already covered and waiting for possible further price drops.
The skimmed milk powder market has been more stable, but prices are now under pressure from rising milk supply and strong competition from the US on the global market.
