EDF Snapshot

The "Snapshot"-Survey by EDF and agri benchmark:
Comparing future developments in dairying across borders

Looking into the future of dairying is not easy these days. That is why we run the “Snapshot” survey. On a four page questionnaire the participating dairy farmers tell us about their future plans and state their opinions on certain issues.

EDF organises the Snapshot in cooperation with agri benchmark. This international network is also coordinated by DLG and vTI and focuses on worldwide competitiveness of dairy production, beef and cash crop production.

The Snapshot focuses on different topics every year: “quality of life”, “fodder production” or “limits to dairy production” to name only some of the topics chosen in the past.

In 2008 more than 1,500 dairy farmers from 17 European countries took part in the survey. This increasing number - by now not only of European countries anymore - reflects the interest in looking into the future in a structured and comparable way. Even though there never is certainty about the future, farmer’s opinions and estimations indicate trends and allow a better judgement on the future of dairying in different countries and regions. Knowing about future trends in dairy production is important for all players on the dairy market.

The results of the survey are not only presented on the annual EDF Congress (please see “Annual Congress” for results), they are also evaluated for regional groups. As a dairy farmer or advisor who is interested in getting a clearer view on the development in your region, you can join the survey by sending an e-mail to edf@vti.bund.de. If more than 15 dairy farmers from your region participate, you will get a detailed analysis for your region compared to other regions in your country and to Europe.

The Snapshot project is interesting for

  • individual dairy farmers interested in learning about their individual position within Europe
  • groups of dairy farmers and advisors interested in learning about the future development of their group members in comparison to other regions in the country and in comparison to their dairy farmers in Europe
  • companies in the dairy business interested in learning about the future development in dairy production
